Type 1 SPDs are installed at the primary service entrance (before the main breaker) to protect against severe direct lightning impulses. Type 2 SPDs are installed at sub-distribution boards to protect downstream electronics against switching surges and indirect lightning. Type 3 SPDs are point-of-use surge strips that provide final fine protection for sensitive equipment.
SPDs protect against transient high-voltage impulses (microsecond duration). An adjustable over/undervoltage protector (like our 63A 3-in-1 model) guards against sustained grid instability (seconds to minutes) by physically disconnecting the load, and automatically reconnects once grid voltage normalizes.
